It is an evergreen plant with sword-shaped leaves that have a pleasant nutty scent and develop their aroma mainly when dried. The Pandanus plant is very common in Asia and the tropics. The pandanus plant is also used as a spice, but mostly fresh. When eaten raw, the pandanus plant tastes nutty and somewhat vanilla-like.
